“Will you bring a pizza tonight?” Fuck. Why was I so fucking needy all of a sudden?“I’m not sure I can afford pizza every night but—”
“I’ll pay for them. Seriously, I’ll set up an account at whatever place you want. They’ll have it ready for you and…shit. Sorry, I’m fucking this up. Never mind,” I said when he began to look a trifle spooked. “Forget I said that, it’s just…shit. Shit.”
“Boone, stop. Stop trying to make me feel better at your expense. I’m fine with that arrangement. Truly,” he added when I looked at him with disbelief. He lifted a mug that matched mine to his lips. They weren’t glossy now. I had lapped the sparkly color off them. My tongue darted out to grab any lingering tastes of cherry gloss that might remain on my lips. His mug shook minutely. Was that because I affected him as much as he did me? “I’m not used to being with people who have such a cavalier attitude about money. Imagine me, Preston Gordon, dating a rich boy. It boggles, it really does!”
“Are we dating?” I asked. He met my look with one that seemed to be as confused as mine was.
“I honestly don’t know. We’re doing something, though, aren’t we?”
“Yeah, we’re doing something.”
“Yes, well, it’s time for me to vacate before I’m late for social welfare policy. Professor Sandruski is a breathing bitch. Do you want pizza tonight? Or would you rather wait for a few days?”
“Tonight.” I cupped my mug with both hands now, just so I wouldn’t do something stupid like lunge at the man. He rinsed out his mug, placed it into the dishwasher, then gave me a fast look from under his orange bangs.
“Are you sure? Don’t push yourself,” he said as he closed the dishwasher.
“I’m sure. What are you studying?” I felt like a major asshat. Here I had kissed the guy twice, yet didn’t know what his major was or how he’d even got his prim little foot into Rock Point. I wanted to know. Huh. And he wasn’t a jock. Was he? I never really considered ice skaters to be jocks. I guess I never considered what ice skaters were.
“I’m going to be a social worker. And before you ask, I have to go. I like my ass chewed but not by women with blue hair. If you need me, I put my number in your cell. If you want to talk at any time, you call, okay?” I nodded, my eyes closing as he swished in for a buss of my cheek. His lips were so warm and soft. “Okay?”
“Yes.”
